This week, the Energy & Commerce Committee begins work on the American Clean Energy & Security Act (H.R. 2454). This comprehensive clean energy plan will create the industries of tomorrow and millions of new American jobs.

At a time when America has lost millions of jobs, it’s clear that we need to start moving in a new direction. Saying “no” or supporting the status quo is not an option.

But without a clear signal from the federal government about the direction of our energy future, investors and entrepreneurs won’t make any new investments. This means that new construction, new opportunities and new jobs won’t happen until Congress acts. In other words, we need Congress to send a clear signal that clean, low-carbon energy sources will power this country in the 21st century.

The American Clean Energy & Security Act is a strong start. It’s exactly the kind forward looking policy that will make the U.S. a leader in the clean energy technologies of the future.

Duke leaving industry group because of climate policy

Duke Energy Corp., which provides electric utility services to nearly 700,000 customers in Ohio, is ending its membership in the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) partly because of the association's staunch opposition to reducing global warming pollution and creating a clean energy economy. From Bloomberg News:

"We are not renewing our membership in the NAM because in tough times, we want to invest in associations that are pulling in the same direction we are," Duke Chief Executive Officer Jim Rogers said last month in an interview. The association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Republicans "ought to roll up their sleeves and get to work on a climate bill, but quite frankly, I don't see them changing."

Duke is a founding member of the United States Climate Action Partnership, which is a group of businesses and environmental organizations that have come together to call on the federal government to quickly enact strong national legislation to require significant reductions of greenhouse gas emissions.

In an editorial in today’s issue of the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call, entitled "Clean Energy Can Bolster Industry," Sen. Sherrod Brown makes the case that reducing the carbon pollution that causes global warming can bolster Ohio manufacturing and create new jobs in a clean energy economy.

"Done right, climate change legislation will improve our nation’s competitiveness by creating new jobs and developing new technologies. We must confront the twin challenges of our economy and environment with a robust and thoughtful response. And we must recognize that climate change legislation is an opportunity to rebuild our nation’s manufacturing base."

The Newark Advocate reported today on Rep. Space’s visit to Owens Corning in which he touted the economic benefits of two key energy provisions included in the recovery package.

Space, D-Dover, said although the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act had been controversial, he is pleased to see energy conservation issues being addressed while benefiting the local economy.

"It's nice to come back and see first-hand how that vote is transferring into job creation," Space said.

Ohio receives energy efficiency funding

Rep. Space announced today Ohio will receive more than $360 million in weatherization and energy efficiency funding through the economy recovery package, which the congressman supported. The funding will help people make their homes more efficient, cut down on energy consumption and support local industry.

Economic recovery package becomes law

President Obama today signed in to law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act . As the Jacksonville County Times-Journal reported, the clean energy provisions included in the president’s plan will have significant benefits:

"Also, Mr. President aims to get high speed internet access clear across the county, and double our sources of clean energy, saving Americans lots of money, while also allowing us to have less of a carbon footprint on the Earth as our pollution ratings are higher than they have ever been."

Many of the 3.5 million jobs that the Obama administration anticipated will be created as a result of this package will be in the clean energy and green technology industries.

On Rep. Space’s website, “Advanced Energy” is listed as one of the congressman’s nine issue priorities. It’s great that Rep. Space sees energy as one of the most pressing issues we face and that he recognizes that we can create new jobs by developing alternative sources of energy, especially given his seat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. On the website it says:

“Changes in how we produce our energy can stimulate economic growth and new opportunities for jobs in the region. Congressman Space is working hard to ensure that Ohio is among the nation’s leaders in green jobs.”

But let’s make sure that we’re moving towards a clean energy economy – and away from dirty fossil fuels – so we can create truly green jobs as well as a healthier, more sustainable planet.
